Fly Fishing
The allure of Tsimane and the magnificent Dorado that inhabit its waters goes beyond just offering great fishing. The Fly Odyssey team has been fortunate enough to fish in some of the world’s most renowned fisheries, from the crystal clear backcountry rivers on the South Island of New Zealand, to the impossibly picturesque white sand flats in French Polynesia. From the rocky shores of Iceland down to the wine country in Patagonia. None of these places has moved us and represented the true spirit of our adventurous angling souls quite like Tsimane.
Tsimane is history in the making, a place that has never been showcased to the world before, and we deeply believe that it offers the ultimate fly-fishing adventure and experience. Tsimane opens a door to one of the last spots yet to be explored in fly fishing: fly fishing for huge Dorado in small, clear freestone rivers.
Fishing in these rivers, despite their abundant populations of voracious Dorado with their aggressive natures, still presents a challenge for anglers. Dorado can be spooky, and each pool and run must be analyzed with a plan developed in consultation with your guide. The ability to shoot 60 feet of line in just a few false casts and accurately place the fly at the right time during a feeding frenzy is critical. A powerful and long double haul definitely comes in handy, and we encourage our guests to practice casting larger flies before coming to Tsimane.
It’s important to fish “light,” with only the essentials in your kit, such as a streamer wallet, a few flies, a spool of mono and wire, and pliers on your waist. The rest of your gear can be left in the boat, which will always be close by. These rivers are typical freestone rivers, with runs and pools that a trout fisherman accustomed to fishing streamers will find familiar.
Setting the hook on Dorado, Yatorana, and Pacu requires a strip-set with lots of pressure to drive the hook point deep due to their hard bony heads and mouths. This may be familiar to anglers experienced in tarpon fishing, but freshwater anglers may take some time and lose a few fish before getting the hang of it.
Pluma Lodge’s Heli program offers a range of options for anglers. This diverse variety of waters and pools means that groups can fish fresh water every day, rarely if ever repeating the same fishing beat. The water types vary from deep pools to rugged terraced pocket water, providing a unique and diverse fishing experience.
TRAVEL PLAN
Tsimane’s operational area is located approximately 125 miles from the capital city of La Paz and 270 miles from Santa Cruz De La Sierra, which is the base point and a major city in Bolivia. There are multiple travel options available to reach Santa Cruz’s Viru Viru International Airport, including daily flights from Miami, San Pablo, Buenos Aires, Panama, Lima, and Europe. Many airlines offer direct connections to major airports worldwide. We highly recommend obtaining Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption insurance for all bookings made with Fly Odyssey.

LODGING
The Pluma Lodge Heli program boasts four charming log cabins that can comfortably accommodate up to 4 anglers, single occupancy. Each cabin is equipped with cozy spring box beds, private bathrooms complete with hot water and electric lighting. In the evenings, guests are treated to a culinary delight with our delectable International Cuisine, perfectly paired with exquisite Argentinean Varietals, in the elegantly designed living and dining room. To ensure connectivity, the lodge provides satellite internet wireless connection and phone service for all guests, allowing them to stay connected while enjoying the beauty of nature. There is a daily laundry service at the lodge included in the trip price.
