Fly Fishing
Blanket Bay was born out of its owner’s passion for fly fishing and is designed to provide an unparalleled experience for even the most seasoned and discerning anglers.
Located in proximity to renowned rivers such as the Greenstone and Caples, which are just a short helicopter ride away, as well as numerous rivers on the West Coast, guests have access to a diverse range of fishing environments, including slow-moving pools, fast runs and riffles, bush-clad streams, open river floats, and small mountain lakes.
Guests can choose to fish in local rivers and streams close to the lodge, or opt to fly-fish along the lake banks or at the mouths of the rivers that flow into Lake Wakatipu. Trout weighing up to ten pounds have been caught in the vicinity of the lodge.
The lake is home to Brown and Rainbow Trout and Landlocked Quinnat Salmon, with fishing available all year round. The fishing season on the rivers runs from November through to May, offering excellent nymph-fishing during the early season and superb dry-fly and nymph-fishing during the summer months.
Brown and Rainbow Trout typically weigh more than three pounds, with five to six-pound trout being relatively common. Trophy-sized Trout over ten pounds are more likely to be caught in the early or late season.
